How to Increase Your Remission from Depression

Often people ask “How long will the benefits from Ketamine infusion therapy last?”  While this can vary from person to person, we have consistently found that lifestyle habits can have an important impact.  There are wellness components that can help to increase the length of time between treatments.

A recent study has confirmed what we have known for years – exercise helps.  Specifically, cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, or running, riding a bike, or playing an active sport (single’s tennis, basketball), can help keep depression symptoms at bay.

The symptoms most targeted by aerobic exercise include memory and alertness.  The interesting factor in this new research is the benefit of exercise was measured with individuals who had already been treated successfully for depression.  While the subjects were persons who had suffered from severe chronic depression, following successful treatment, they still were able to benefit further and maintain treatment goals with the addition of exercise.

Aerobic exercise (brisk walk, ride a stationary bike) should be done three times weekly.  Try to get your heart rate in the 60-75% target range.  What does this feel like? If you are not using a monitoring device, think about brisk walking.  You should be able to talk, but still feel like you can break a sweat.  Other activities, including stretching or other mild exercise, are valuable, but do not provide the same benefits for alleviating depressive symptoms.
