6 Tips to Help You Know What to Say to Someone You Love With Depression

Many of us probably know or love someone that is dealing with depression and knowing what to say to them can sometimes be a struggle. We want to be there for them, but how? What do we say? How can we help?

The following are 6 things you can say or do to show someone you know or love with depression that you support them.

  1. Make your presence known. Let that person know you are there, in any way necessary. Pick up the phone, email them, Facetime them, drop by for a visit (wear a mask and social distance of course), write them a good old-fashioned letter, mail them a greeting card. Any possible way to reach out to them, reach out. No gesture is too small. It probably feels good to any one of us to know that someone out there is thinking of us, especially now, in a time when things can seem even more lonely and isolated.
  2. Tell that person, you love them, you care about them, or you forgive them (if applicable of course). Let it always be known.
  3. Offer a listening ear and actually listen to what they are saying. If they are not ready to talk, assure them that is ok too and that you are always ready to listen when they are ready. Sometimes people just appreciate silence, or just want to let out a cry and appreciate someone to just be there with them to provide support.
  4. When your friend or loved one is ready to talk but you feel uncomfortable with the subject or feel they need unbiased or professional guidance, offer to help them find someone to help them. Sometimes depression can become so overwhelming that people can not even think about anything outside of whatever is consuming them.
  5. Validate their feelings, let them know it is okay to not feel okay and that you are there to help them in any way you can or feel comfortable with doing. Reach out to others if necessary or seek professional help when needed.
  6. When in doubt about what to say, ask them what you can do to help.  It may be just sitting next to them while watching TV, listening to them vent about their day, giving them a hug, or handing them a tissue when they have a good cry session.
