Chronic Medical Problems and Depression

Chronic Medical Problems and Depression

Many people struggle with chronic health issues.  These can include pain syndromes, such as CRPS and fibromyalgia, diabetes, kidney disease, lupus and MS to name a few. These can create limitations in a person’s life.  They may be less able to get out and do things they used to enjoy.  Having to give up activities is a loss in your life.

Illness also causes people to isolate.  It is not surprising, therefore, that up to 1/3 of people who struggle with chronic illness also experience depression.  In addition to quality of life, treatment of depression can often minimize symptoms of other chronic illnesses, and help someone stick to their treatment plan.  Untreated, depression can lead to worsening of mood and physical ailments and increase thoughts of suicide.

Sometimes, the signs of depression look like the signs of chronic illness.  Fatigue, loss of appetite, and decreased energy are all part of both many chronic illnesses and depression.  It is easy to miss the signs or not recognize the presence of both.

So what can you do if you are struggling with the “double whammy” of chronic illness and depression?

  1. Don’t isolate. Reach out to family and friends.  Build a support network by joining a support group, such as we offer, or find out about other resources available in your community.
  2. Learn all you can about your “conditions”. Knowledge is power and will help you be more able to take charge of your treatment and a sense of greater control.
  3. Utilize all medical resources. We offer experts in mental health and Ketamine treatments to provide more comprehensive sources.

If you, or someone in your life is struggling with chronic illness, watch for changes in mood or other signs of depression.  If you’re not sure, the professionals at Ketamine Wellness Center can provide you with assistance in recognizing whether depression is part of your life.  Call today and get help for you or your loved one.  There is no reason to worsen your struggle.  There is hope.
