As Houston Struggles with Mental Health, Ketamine Wellness Centers Offers Hope
A well-researched and illuminating article, published by Understanding Houston analyzed state-wide data around the prevalence of mental health conditions, as well as the lack of access to therapeutics, clinical treatment centers, and other essential resources that can go a long way in helping to combat the debilitating effects that depression, suicidality, PTSD, and other personality disorders have on the people of Texas, namely Houston.
Framing Houston’s Statistics on Mental Health
According to data from 2016’s County Health Rankings (Age-Adjusted), Harris County alone tallied 3.6 days for the average number of mentally unhealthy days among adults in a month. Drilling down on the demographics, 26.2% of Harris County women reported five or more days of poor mental health per month, eclipsing the state and federal figures.
The figures on per capita access to mental health services are even starker but the bottom line is that Texas ranks last out of 51 states for mental health access. Focusing on Houston and Harris County, the provider-to-resident ratio is below the rate for Texas as a whole, as well as the nation.
Closing the Gap in Access to Care
These statistics were one of the primary reasons why we opened up Ketamine Wellness Centers – Houston in October 2020. As the Clinical Administrator for KWC Houston, I have been tasked with delivering KWC’s signature clinical program centered on IV ketamine infusion therapy and our commitment to high quality, compassionate care to the great people of Houston, Texas. We celebrate excellent success rates in the treatment of both mental health (80%) and neuropathic pain (90%) conditions.
Our mental health protocol is designed to combat the most severe effects that depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bi-polar disorder, and suicidal ideation have on the brain. Our chronic pain protocol delivers long-lasting relief to those suffering from neuropathic pain conditions, such as Fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and other pain ailments. Within both protocols, our patients have experienced a reduction or total cessation in their use of antidepressants, mood disorders, and opiate prescription medications. Don’t take it from us, read and watch their stories for yourself.
Being able to bridge the gap In Houston between the high rate of mental health illness and the lack of sufficient treatment resources underscores KWC’s core values of compassion, precision, integrity, dignity, and innovation. While Ketamine is just one powerful clinical tool in the greater fight to treat depression and other disorders, we have seen ketamine infusion treatments offer a path to long-term wellness and directly curtail those symptoms that handicap the afflicted in their day to day lives.
There is hope. There is help.
At KWC Houston, we strive to be the gold standard in care. We accomplish this through several key features which define our clinical program but that are unfortunately not common practices in a fair number of our peers in this space. What makes KWC different is:
- A clinical program that combines the in-house guidance of mental health professionals with the precision of anesthesia so that we can recommend the most customized clinical treatment plan for each of our patients, all led by board-certified Anesthesiologist, Dr. Mark Murphy, and Psychologist, Dr. Ellen Diamond.
- One on One Care: it’s just you and your dedicated practitioner, backed by an entire team of clinical professionals.
- Comfortable and private treatment rooms and a healing environment.
- We support our patients outside of the treatment room too.
If you or a loved one is suffering, please know that there is hope and help. Ketamine infusion therapy can restore your function so that you are finally able to pursue avenues of healing and get back to living your best life.
