For decades, I made the same resolutions every year. My starting point might have been different, but the resolutions were the same. I think I’m not the only one. For example, one of my standard resolutions is weight loss. I see the ads for weight loss aides starting January 1, and I know I am not alone in this quest. In the store one time, someone asked me if what I was buying worked. I thought for a moment, and responded, “If it did, I wouldn’t be buying it every year.” So don’t despair, resolutions don’t always work. What does work?
Rather than picking specific things you think you SHOULD do, give yourself the gift of perspective. Look at the big picture and ask yourself:
- If you could create any life for yourself, what would it look like? For example, do you want to live in an urban or more rural environment? Climate? Culture? Think about your ideal – is your current environment along those lines or are you in the wrong place?
- What about your work? How do you spend your time? Are there fulfilling activities in your daily life? Does your daily work (not just employment but all the duties you perform) bring you joy or self-fulfillment? Do you make a difference to others?
- What about the supports in my life? Do I have positive people who encourage and support my wellbeing? Are there people who drain me? Cultivate a good social support network and seek out positive people. Make the time and effort to nurture healthy relationships.
- What prevents me from achieving my dreams? Are there obstacles to pursuing a happier life? Are they internal (lack of confidence) or external (lack of transportation). How do I overcome these roadblocks? Even if I can’t eliminate them immediately, developing and implementing a long-term plan can start to diminish these overwhelming and crippling handcuffs.
