Seven Tips for the Management of Chronic Pain in Conjunction with Ketamine Therapy
Chronic Pain is a condition suffered by many Americans each day. According to the CDC, 1 in 5, or about 20.4% of U.S. adults suffer from chronic pain. Patients that have suffered from chronic pain that have not found relief with other treatments or medications may benefit from ketamine infusion therapy. Ketamine therapy helps combat chronic pain by blocking chemical receptors in the nervous system called NMDA. Here at KWC, we treat a variety of chronic pain conditions with ketamine infusion therapy. Some of the conditions treated are CRPS, fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, neuropathic pain, trigeminal neuralgia, and more.
We encourage our patients to utilize multiple modalities to achieve the best outcome. Having our patients fully understand their condition and providing them the education and resources needed for them to take control of their own health and outcome is essential. Along with ketamine therapy, here are seven tips to help manage your chronic pain:
Knowledge is power
Learn all you can about your condition. Work with your medical providers to understand what is going on with your body, what treatments are available, and what you, personally can do to help achieve the best outcomes. The internet is a powerful tool, however, it is important to make sure you are gathering your information from a reliable and credible source.
Take medications as prescribed by your health care provider following the appropriate schedules. If a medication is not working or you are experiencing unpleasant side effects, notify your provider so they can address the situation. Don’t ever stop taking medications without speaking to your medical provider first. Many medications require a wean or tapering schedule and can cause unwanted side effects if stopped abruptly. We do have patients receiving ketamine therapy that are able to decrease dosing or eliminate some of their medications altogether, however, that should always be done with the guidance of the prescribing provider.
Speak to a dietician or a person that specializes in nutrition to find a diet that works best with the condition you have. Some foods may exacerbate inflammatory processes which in turn can cause a flare in pain. Some pain conditions may also be exacerbated by being overweight so following a healthy diet can aid in weight loss and alleviate the excess weight on joints. It is also important to stay adequately hydrated.
Work as a team with all providers involved
When possible, notify all providers that you are receiving ketamine infusions so that a plan can be made having everyone included. It is important to communicate so that everyone is on the same page so that the best treatment plan can be made up for your success.
It is important to get an adequate amount of sleep to help our bodies recharge and recover. I know if you are in chronic pain, sleeping may be a challenge for you as it may be hard to get comfortable. There is OTC melatonin to try, some people have had success with CBD products taken before bed, others find success with positioning aids, a firmer mattress, or meditation before bed. Also, talk to your provider to find out if a prescription sleep aid may benefit you. KWC also offers a variety of supplements and CBD products that may help you get a good night’s rest!
Know your limitations but also find out what you can do. It is important to keep moving because when we are immobile our muscles can decondition and we become weaker making mobility even more difficult. You may have to work with a physical or occupational therapist at first to make adjustments or get stronger before you can move on to other things. If you can stretch, do that or try yoga which is also good to help in dealing with stress. Weights, cardio, walking, stretching, or anything that gets you moving and is within your capabilities.
Support is essential when dealing with any chronic condition. You should work with a therapist if you aren’t already. If you need recommendations for therapy, let us know as we offer all of our patients an option to join our own Facilitated Treatment Support program which gives each patient a private one on one session to help them set personal goals and help you find ways to optimize ketamine therapy. Lean on your family, friends, and loved ones and reach out when needed for help.
